If you had mentioned WeChat to me 5 years ago, I wouldn’t have any clue what you were talking about. Now, WeChat is a something that I check daily!
What is WeChat?
WeChat is a social media platform that is similar to Instagram or Facebook, but with one very big difference. That difference is the ability to see everything from your friend’s friends.
Let me explain. When we use Instagram, we make a post. Then our friends see it. If our friends choose to comment, everyone that sees that post can see their comment. When you use WeChat, other people do not see those comments unless they are “friending” both the original poster AND the commenter.
How do I get the app?
Even though this isn’t a typical app for most Americans, you just have to visit the app store and you will find the WeChat app. It is also available in the Google Play store.
How do I find friends on WeChat?
The easiest way to find friends is by scanning their QR code. If you don’t have their QR code, you can also type in their phone number or search for their handle. I should also note, if you allow the app to access your contacts, new phone contacts will be suggested to you as WeChat friends from within the app.
What are the WeChat posting limitations?
Similarly to Instagram, you must post a picture or video to be able to post to WeChat. Unlike Instagram, you must make sure that the video is 15 seconds or less when you post it to your moments. If you choose pictures, you are able to post up to 9 pictures in one posting.
What is a “moment”?
“Moments” are the name of your main feed or “news page” on WeChat. When you “make a moment” you are basically just posting your picture or video and words to go with it.
What if I can’t read the language that they wrote in?
The app has a built in feature that allows you to translate what is being said right from the post. To do this, click and hold on the post that you want to read. Tap the word “translate”. The post will be translated for you. If the translation doesn’t make sense, you can always copy and paste it into Google Translate.
As an online English teacher, I have found many uses for WeChat. See “How WeChat Helped My VIPKid Students”.
